asic concepts used by Raymond Aron allow us to clearly understand the dynamics of the relations among the South American republics during the period of their initial consolidation as states. They employed their military and diplomatic capabilities to survive as sovereign political units within a context of alternating war and peace, based on the choice between autonomy and federation, distribution of power among states, and personal and national rivalries accentuated by military leadership and numerous boundary disputes.
