Peru-Japan trade relations: a brief history and current situation

This article describes the commercial relationship between Peru and Japan since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1873. In 1890, in what would become the first Japanese investment abroad, a group of Japanese came to Peru to explore the investment in a silver mine. Trade relations between both countries began years later and Japan became Peru's second largest trading partner between 1960s and early 1990s and is still an important trading partner (the fourth largest), although the structure of trade between the two countries remains the same. Japan is also a major investor in Peru, in the natural resources sector.
